NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A pair of triples, one in the fourth from senior
Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) and one in the fifth inning from sophomore
Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area), and a complete-game six hitter from sophomore
Payton Whary (Shamokin, Pa./Shamokin Area) helped the Lycoming College softball team overpower Worcester State, 6-2, on Thursday night, March 17, at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex. The Warriors fell in their first game of the day, 5-2, to Medaille.
Â
Whary (1-2) finished off a complete game, facing just 27 batters while allowing six hits, one earned run and a walk. She also struck out one in her first win of the year.
Â
After single runs from the Lancers (3-5 overall) in the second and fourth innings, the Warriors (2-4 overall) got on the board with a four-run fourth inning. Senior
Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) started the inning with a one-out triple to right before scoring on a two-out wild pitch. Senior
Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) kept the inning alive with a single before sophomore
Rachel DeWolfe (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) singled, setting up a fly ball down the line by first-year
Rachel Daub (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) that a diving right fielder couldn't corral, allowing the tying run to score. An error on the next play allowed both DeWolfe and Daub to also score.
Â
Segraves hit a one-out triple in the fifth before scoring on a groundout to make it 5-2. In the sixth, DeWolfe led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single through the right side by first-year
Molly Shappell (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area).
Â
The Warriors flashed some leather in the sixth. With a runner on first, sophomore
Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) ranged deep to her right to stab a liner headed for the wall in left field, and an alert appeal caught the runner for missing second on the way back to first. Then junior
Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) made a diving catch in center field, rolling over to show the ball in the shallow outfield.
Â
Rachel Sinclair led the Lancers, going 2-for-2 with a run and RBI. Emily Bartlett (1-3) took the loss, allowing three hits and two earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. She struck out four.
Â
The Warriors brought the winning run to the plate in the sixth inning, but three unearned runs in the first inning were the difference in a 5-2 win by Medaille (7-1 overall) in the first game of the day.
Â
Down by three runs in the sixth, the Warriors got a pair of two-out hits from senior
Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and sophomore
Kylie Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area), but a flyout ended the threat.
Â
The Warriors matriculated a run across in the first inning, as sophomore
Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice, third on a groundout and scored on an error.
Â
After the three-run first from Medaille, the Warriors cut the lead to a run in the fourth when junior
