Warriors fall to Widener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A second-half goal off a free kick just outside the box helped lift Widener University past the Lycoming College women's soccer team, 1-0, in non-conference action at UPMC Field on Sunday, Sept. 26.

Lycoming (6-3 overall) recognized eight senior members of the team during a pre-game celebration. The Warriors' starting lineup consisted of five of those seniors: Alicia Blizzard (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), Kailey Coelho (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius), Jayden Leighow (Unityville, Pa./Hughesville), Hannah Lounsbury (Wassaic, N.Y./Webutick) and Bekki Weller (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area). Jess Riordan (Vineland, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy) relieved Weller in net in the second half. Bailey Gilmore (Ivyland, Pa./Germantown Academy) did not play due to injury and Bronwen Lewis (Crespatown, Md./Allegany) serves as the team's videographer.

Leighow had five of the Warriors' seven shots.

Widener (5-2 overall) scored its lone goal in the 51st minute when Madison Forte got a free kick just past a leaping keeper.

Goalkeepers Riordan and Weller made a combined nine saves for the Warriors. Samantha Coon made two saves on two shots on goal for the Pride, as she helped the team to its third straight shutout.

The Warriors return to the field on Thursday, Sept. 30, when they face Pitt-Bradford in Bradford, Pa., at 4 p.m.
