Warriors fall to Monarchs

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – In a wild affair, complete with three lead changes and the game-tying run being left at third base in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader, the Lycoming College softball team came up just short in an 8-7 setback to King's College after King's won the first game, 8-1, on Saturday, April 24, at the Betzler Softball Complex.

Sophomore Madalyn Bechdel (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) led the Warrior offense, with three of the team's 13 hits. She also added two runs, a double and a RBI. Junior Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI and first-year Rachel DeWolfe () added a 2-for-4 effort with a run and RBI.

After loading the bases with no outs in the sixth and not scoring, the Warriors got back to work down by three runs in the top of the seventh. Junior Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) was hit by a pitch to lead off. After a groundout, DeWolfe and junior Morgan Christine (Reigelsville, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) singled to load the bases. A grounder scored a run and Bechdel singled through the right side to put runners at first and third, but a strikeout ended the game.

The Warriors got on the board in the first, as Bechdel walked and moved to third after a pair of groundouts before Klosko singled up the middle to score Bechdel. Reitz singled and first-year Morgan Segraves (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) walked to load the bases before DeWolfe singled through the left side.

King's countered with three runs in the bottom of the first. In the second, the Warriors took the lead back, as Bechdel doubled with one out, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by first-year Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area). Senior Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) followed with a single and Klosko used an infield single to score Russell. A fielder's choice scored one more run.

King's took the lead with a five-run fifth, though, getting six hits to take an 8-5 lead, setting up the Warriors' seventh-inning comeback.

Bailey Loyack went 2-for-4 with two runs and Kristi Ann Skok went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer.

Gabrielle Visconti (6-3) led the Monarchs, allowing four hits and two runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Sophomore Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) (4-4) tossed a complete game, allowing 12 hits and four earned runs.
