Warriors win nightcap against Colonels

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Two doubles and three RBI from junior Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) helped lift the Lycoming College softball team to a 6-4 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Wilkes University after falling 4-3 in the first game of the MAC Freedom doubledip at the Ralston Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon, April 17.

Sophomore Payton Whary (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. She walked one and struck out one. After allowing six hits in the first two innings, she allowed just a single and a walk in the final five, slamming the door shut on a Wilkes comeback by getting the last seven batters that she faced.

Down 4-2 in the third, the Warriors (10-8 overall, 9-5 MAC Freedom) started to rally with one out off a single from sophomore Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain), who stole second and scored on an opposite field double from Klosko to make it 4-3. Senior Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) tied the game with a double to center, driving in Klosko. An error, walk and fielder's choice loaded the bases before two runs scored on a single up the middle from sophomore Kaleigh Kinley (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area).

The Warriors got two runs in the first, with freshman Kylie Russell (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) reaching on an error before junior Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) was hit by a pitch. After a groundout, Klosko delivered a two-run double to left center.

Wilkes (3-15 overall, 3-11 MAC Freedom) took the lead with three runs off four hits in the bottom of the inning before a homer from Haley Boyd in the second inning gave the Colonels a 4-2 advantage.

Jordyn Kondras and Erin Cabry each had two hits and  run for Wilkes.

Rachel Pritchard (0-6) was tagged with the loss for Wilkes, allowing three earned runs and five hits in 2 2/3 innings.

In the first game, the Warriors scored two runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, but Wilkes was able to come-from-behind in the bottom of the inning for a 4-3 win.

Reitz led off the sixth by reaching second on an outfield error before she scored on a single by Wetzel. After a flyout, Gessner doubled to left to bring in Wetzel, giving Lycoming a 3-1 lead.

Wilkes responded with five hits to score three runs in the bottom of the inning, with Haley Boyd singling through the right side for the big blow.

Sophomore Mackenzie Glosek (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) reached on an error and got to third in the seventh thanks to two sac bunts, but a groundout ended the threat.

The Warriors got on the board in the first when Wetzel singled up the middle and a double down the left-field line by Wetzel brought her around.

Wilkes tied the game in the fourth when Erin Cabry doubled and scored on a single to center by Sarah Gibson.

Wetzel finished 3-for-3 with two runs to lead the Warriors offense. Cabry went 3-for-3 with two runs and two doubles to lead Wilkes.

Hope Mullins (2-2) earned the win, allowing six hits and one earned run in the complete game for the Colonels. She struck out six. Junior Angie King (Cooperstown, Pa./Maplewood) took the loss, allowing eight hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings. She struck out three and walked one.

The Warriors wrap up their four-game set with Wilkes when the Colonels come to the Shangraw Athletic Complex for a 1 p.m. MAC Freedom doubleheader on Sunday, April 18.
