Warriors roll on, down Misericordia, 44-16

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Elijah Shemory (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) became the fifth Lycoming College quarterback to throw for 5,000 yards in a career, blowing way past that number by tossing for 286 yards and three touchdowns, leading the football team on a run of 44 straight points to open a 44-16 win over Misericordia University on Saturday, Oct. 9, at David Person Field.

The Warriors passed for 469 total yards of offense, 329 in the first half, and allowed the Cougars just 50 yards in the first half while building a 30-0 lead.

Shemory finished 16-of-23, crossing the 5,000-yard plateau with a 37-yard dagger of a throw just over a leaping Cougar and into the waiting arms of senior Tyjah During (Accokeek, Md./Surrattsville) to make it 14-0 just more than five minutes into the game. He finished the game with 5,213 yards, 200 yards from Lycoming Athletics Hall of Famer Larry Barretta's total set from 1983-86. He is also tied for sixth with 38 passing touchdowns with Lycoming Athletics Hall of Famer Rick Burd (1978-80) and his 370 completions are also sixth, six shy of tying Lycoming Athletics Hall of Famer Phil Mann (2001-04).

During caught five passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns and senior Tre' Leach (Middletown, Pa./Middletown Area) caught three for 61 yards. Senior Kevin Krawczyk (Dupont, Pa./Pittston Area) caught three passes for 52 yards.

The Warriors also ran 43 times for 183 yards, with junior Kyle Powell (Philadelphia, Pa./Lincoln) rushing nine times for 60 yards and junior Joey Guida (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) rushing 10 times for 55 yards and a score.

The Warrior offense scored on eight of its first nine possessions. It moved 80 yards on 11 plays on its first drive before Shemory scrambled to his left for a 15-yard touchdown to make it 7-0. After senior Sam Pittsman (Archbald, Pa./Valley View) fell on a fumble at the 37, Shemory hooked up with During on the next play.

They got the ball back after a four-play Misericordia drive at their own 32 and drove it down to the eight, setting up the first of three straight field goals from sophomore Ian Plankenhorn (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area), who connected from 25 yards on that drive before hitting from 23 with 10:18 left in the second quarter and 37 with 4:55 left.

The Warriors got one more opportunity with 2:27 left, getting the ball at midfield after junior Cole Senior (Middletown, Pa./Middletown Area) and Pittsman combined for a stop on 4-and-1. Five plays later, Guida rushed in from the three to complete the scoring in the half.

Shemory led the Warriors on a 10-play, 90-yard drive to start the second half, with Shemory finding During, who hit the pylon for a 28-yard touchdown reception to cap the drive. On their next possession, it was sophomore Brandon Timothy (West Paterson, N.J./Passaic Valley) flying into the left corner for the score off a screen pass before rolling 23 yards in for the score.

The Cougars got their first points of the game with a safety before scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Sophomore Kevin Gianoni (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) led the defense with seven tackles, 1.5 for loss, and Senior had six, 1.5 for loss. Sophomore Braden Mehlig (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) had five tackles and forced fumble, Pittsman had four stops and a fumble recovery and sophomore Hunter Campbell (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) posted four tackles, 0.5 for loss and a breakup in the end zone.

Mitchel Micale finished 17-of-23 for 183 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars. Jadyn Childs caught seven passes for 102 yards. David Cromwell ran 25 times for 31 yards. Alex Hafner led the Cougars with eight tackles, three for loss and T.J. Prather had seven and a sack, which accounted for the safety.

The Warriors get back on David Person Field after a bye week, facing Albright College on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m.
