Warriors take Monarchs to the brink

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior Liz Kelson (Denville, N.J./Morris Catholic) had a career-best 19 kills and eight blocks and first-year Brynne Bisel (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) posted career-bests of 16 kills and 25 digs to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team, but King's College scored eight of the last nine points to comeback for a key 3-2 (20-25, 16-25, 25-23, 28-26, 15-12) MAC Freedom win at Scandlon Gym on Tuesday night, Oct. 26.
 
First-year Sydney Guethlein (Cincinnati, Ohio/West Clermont) posted 10 kills, six digs and three blocks and first-year Jessica Ahart (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) posted nine kills and two blocks, as Lycoming (9-16 overall, 2-5 MAC Freedom) posted 62 kills and hit .191, outpacing King's (20-3 overall, 4-3 MAC Freedom), which hit .086.
 
First-year Piper Schwenk (Lyon Station, Pa./Brandywine Heights) posted 50 assists and 13 digs. The defense picked up 107 digs, with first-year Ali Koval (Mansfield, Pa./North Penn-Mansfield) leading the way with 35 digs, while first-year Kendall Myers (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) added 18. First-year Arianna Santos (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) added six kills and five blocks.
 
The Warriors won five of the last six points in the first set to take a 25-20 win before hitting .394 in the second set en route to the 25-16 win. The Monarchs broke a tie at 20 in the third set with two straight points, enough of a cushion to hang on for the 25-23 win. Down 23-21 in the fourth set, the Warriors scored three straight and had three match points, but King's prevailed 28-26. In the final set, the Warriors built an 11-7 lead before King's went on an 8-1 run to win the match.
 
Olivia Bunch led the Monarchs with 20 kills and 17 digs and Danielle Kitchner added 13 kills. Wiatt Hoffman had 51 assists and Karissa Hartzell posted 25 digs.
 
The Warriors wrap up their season on Thursday, Oct. 28, when they host Wilkes University at 7 p.m. in Lamade Gym.
