Koval paces Warriors in split at Hood tri-match

FREDERICK, Md. – First-year Ali Koval (Mansfield, Pa./North Penn-Mansfield) became the first Lycoming College volleyball player in 11 years to reach 40 digs in a match, as she teamed with first-year Kendall Myers (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) for 66 digs in a 3-1 (27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23) win over Hood College to highlight a tri-match at BB&T Arena on Saturday, Oct. 16. The Warriors fell to Elizabethtown, 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-16) in the first match.
 
Koval, who posted 40 digs against the Blazers (3-15 overall), had 19 against the Blue Jays (16-6 overall) to give her 412 on the season, which is just outside the top 20 in program history. Her 6.15 digs per set is second in program history to Emily Abel, who averaged 6.29 in 2009. Her 40 digs against Hood are tied for fifth in program history.
 
Myers added 26 digs against the Blazers and first-year Brynne Bisel (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) had six kills, four aces and 14 digs, as Lycoming (9-14 overall) scooped up 118 of Hood's 209 attack attempts.
 
Junior Liz Kelson (Denville, N.J./Morris Catholic) paced the offense with 15 kills, hitting .419, and first-year Sydney Guethlein (Cincinnati, Ohio/West Clermont) added seven kills, two aces and two blocks. First-year Ava Coombs (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) also had six kills.
 
First-year Piper Schwenk (Lyon Station, Pa./Brandywine Heights) posted 26 assists and nine digs as the setter.
 
MacKenzi Wright had 21 kills and 12 digs and Caitlin Armbruster added 18 kills and 20 digs to pace the Blazers. Jackie Malitzki posted 48 assists and three aces and Walissa Jacque had five blocks.
 
Elizabethtown hit a solid .288 in the first match en route to the sweep.
 
Kelson led the Warriors with five kills and Bisel added four kills and 11 digs. Koval had 19 digs and Myers had 12. Schwenk finished with 13 digs and 15 assists for her first double-double and Guethlein notched three aces.
 
Bryanna Miller led the Blue Jays with 11 kills, Sarah Hanks had 21 assists and Kambrie Hepler posted 24 digs.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 20, when they head to Stevens for a 7 p.m. MAC Freedom match.
