WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A shutout from sophomore goalkeeper
Zack Donoway (Newark, Md./Snow Hill) and a second-half goal led the Lycoming College men's soccer team past rival Susquehanna University, 1-0, in the 19th annual Battle of the Boot on a sunny Saturday afternoon, Sept. 7, at UPMC Field.
The Warriors (1-2 overall) captured their fifth straight Battle of the Boot victory, while winning their fourth in a row by way of a shutout.
The Warriors broke a scoreless-tie in the 67th minute when senior
George Charalabidis (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) sent a header off a pass from freshmen
Jayson Butler (Bel Air, Md./C.Milton Wright) to the lower right 90 of the goal, which caused a diving River Hawk to head the ball into the back of the net in an attempt to knock the shot out of play.
The Warriors defense held off a River Hawk (1-2 overall) attack that controlled possession for periods of the contest, while holding Susquehanna to a season-low three shots, one of which came in the second period.
Donoway earned the win in net, making a save to notch the first shutout of the season. Matt Ellingworth made one save in the full 90 minutes for the River Hawks.
The Warriors are back in action on Monday, Sept. 9, at 4:30 p.m., when they host Mount Aloysius College at UPMC Field.
