WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore
Kalu Ume (Laurel, Md./Laurel) scored his second game-winning goal of the season and freshman
Kevin Kelly (Great Barrington, Mass./Bershire School) notched his third shutout to lead the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Carnegie Mellon University in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 28 at UPMC Field.
Â
The Warriors (5-4 overall) took the lead in the 53
rd minute when junior
Cherif Dicko (Frederick, Md./Sherwood) took two dribbles at the top of the box to create enough space to thread a pass between two Tartan defenders, finding senior
Tanner Fonjweng (Bear, Del./Glascow) at the bottom-right endline. He sent a pass to a cutting Ume, who beat the keeper left for the score.
Â
The goal gives Fonjweng his team-leading third assist and Dicko his first point as a Warrior.
Â
Carnegie Mellon (4-4-1 overall) outshot the Warriors 17-10, but the Lycoming defense held strong throughout and was led by a career-high nine saves by Kelly, including a save off a header from five feet away from the goalline and a leaping save to thread the ball over the crossbar with 20 minutes remaining. Alex Singh made four saves for the Tartans.
Â
The Warriors are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m., when they head to Moravian College for a non-conference game at John Makuvek Field.
