Warriors clinch No. 2 seed with win over Hood

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Two goals in the final 30 minutes helped lift the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 3-1 MAC Commonwealth win over Hood, helping the team earn the No. 2 seed in next week's MAC Commonwealth Championship for the third straight year, on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2, at UPMC Field.

On Senior Day, the Warriors seniors accounted for all three goals and an assist while helping head coach Nate GIbboney win his 99th career game in his seventh year at Lycoming (12-6 overall, 6-2 MAC Commonwealth).

Lycoming broke a tie at one in the 63rd minute when a Warrior forward was undercut by the goalkeeper as he came in for a header in the box off service from senior Nick Thornton (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). Senior Tanner Fonjweng (Bear, Del./Glasgow) drilled the ensuing penalty kick.

Lycoming sealed the win with 3:26 to play, as senior George Charalabidis (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) got a pass from senior Lance Klingler (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) at the top of the box, beat a defender and shot into the net.

The Warriors got on the board early, with Thornton finding the lower right corner for his second career goal on a pass from junior Alex Henry (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle).

Hood (10-8-2 overall, 1-7 MAC Commonwealth) got an equalizer later in the half on a goal from Ricky Salgado.

The Warriors open the MAC Commonwealth Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 6, when they host No. 3 seed Arcadia University at 2 p.m. at UPMC Field. Tickets will be available at the gate for $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for students and children under six are free.
