Ume’s late dagger lifts Warriors past Alvernia, 2-1

READING, Pa. – Sophomore Kalu Ume (Laurel, Md./Laurel) twisted in a 20-yard shot in the 85th minute for his fourth game-winner of the season to lift the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 2-1 MAC Commonwealth win over Alvernia University at the Alvernia Turf Field on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Junior Josh Cruz (Laurel, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) tossed a ball in from about 25 yards out to junior Jared Moses (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh School), who spun off a defender and passed it over to Cruz, who lifted a pass over to Ume, who turned to his left, dribbled once and fired a high-arcing shot into the right corner.

In the ensuing five minutes, the Warriors (10-6 overall, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth) allowed the Golden Wolves (3-12-3 overall, 2-3-1 MAC Commonwealth) to take two shots, but senior Zack Donoway (Newark, Md./Snow Hill) made the one save that he needed to preserve the win.

Lycoming got on the board first in the 32nd minute when senior Nick Thornton (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) lofted a kick to the top of the box, where freshman Kellen Krebs (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle), who headed a ball off the crossbar and down past the goalline.

Alvernia got even with a goal with just seconds left in the first half when Damien Jennings headed a ball in near the far post after a restart.

Donoway finished with eight saves as he lifted the team to its third straight win to move it into third place alone in the MAC Commonwealth with 12 points. Ben Solsky had seven saves off 18 Warrior shots for Alvernia.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, Oct. 30, when they head to Lebanon Valley for a 3:30 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
