Warriors narrowly fall in conference semifinals

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Heading into the singles competition, the No. 3 Lycoming College women's tennis team held a slight edge, thanks to two wins in doubles play, but No. 2 Lebanon Valley College picked up the deciding win in a three-set No. 4 singles match to post a 5-4 tightly contested MAC Commonwealth Championship semifinal win at the Shankroff Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon, May 1.
 
The Warriors got off to a strong start in doubles as sophomore Julia Nagle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) and senior Kaitlin Hallabuk (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles and juniors Kimberleigh Parroccini (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) and Brittany Lenze (St. Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic) came away with an 8-5 decision at No. 3 doubles.
 
After the two dropped a close match at No. 1 doubles, sophomores Hannah Summerson (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) and Devinity Apollon (Washington, D.C./School Without Walls) got the Warriors two more wins in singles play. At her top slot, Apollon defeated Marla Scacchitti, 6-3, 0-6, 6-0. Summerson won at No. 2 singles over Melanie Haas, 6-4, 6-2.
 
Lebanon Valley (11-6 overall, 6-1 MAC Commonwealth), though took the final four singles matches for the narrow win.
 
Summerson wrapped up her sophomore season with a program-best 16-6 singles mark, while her 27 combined wins are tied for second in program history. Hallabuk finished a strong career with 67 combined wins, fifth most in program history. Her 39 singles wins are third most in program history, while her 28 doubles wins are tied for eighth. Her 23 wins this season were fifth in program history, as were her 13 singles wins this season. Apollon, with 12 singles wins, finished the year tied for sixth in program history.
 
The Warriors finished the 2018 season 10-8 overall, 4-3 MAC Commonwealth, under eighth-year head coach LeRoy Baer, reaching 10 wins in consecutive seasons for the first time in program history.
