Warriors drop conference doubleheader to Knights

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior pitcher Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) threw a five-hit gem in the first game and freshman Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) totaled three hits, but the Lycoming College softball team dropped both ends of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader, 1-0, and 13-2, Saturday afternoon, April 14, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Shady gave up five hits, allowed no walks and struck out six and Gessner went 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener.

After giving up a leadoff single, Shady retired nine batters straight and had a shutout going until Kristin Cancelliere led off the fourth with a double and scored on Hunter Schantz's single through the left side. Faced with runners on second and third with one out, Shady retired the next two batters via strikeout and fly out. In the sixth, she was faced with another two runners in scoring position and one-out situation before getting the last two batters to ground out and strike out.

Lycoming had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Gessner reached on a one-out single and sophomores Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) and Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) later reached on two-out singles, but Arcadia escaped the jam.

Senior Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley), junior Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area), Brown and Warriner all had hits for the Warriors (7-17 overall, 1-7 MAC Commonwealth).

Cancelliere went 2-for-3 with a run and Schantz went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead Arcadia (12-12 overall, 8-4 MAC Commonwealth).

Mary Pat Murray (6-6) threw a complete-game shutout for the win, striking out two and walking one.

In the second game, Arcadia jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning, when junior Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was relieved by Shady, who retired nine of the next 11 batters. The Warriors put up two two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth. Gessner led off with a single, was moved to second on Shady's sacrifice bunt and after a fly out, Warriner's single up the middle scored Gessner and Brown's single to right-center field scored Warriner, making it 5-2.

Arcadia pulled away, though, in the seventh inning when it put up seven runs on six hits.

Jackie Bilotti put up three hits, two runs, two RBIs and a double and Haley Friess (2-for-3, three RBIs) and Murray (2-for-3, run) each had multi-hit games for the Knights. Julia Gessner had a pinch-hit solo home run in the sixth inning.

Gessner extended her hit streak to five games, and Warriner also went 1-for-3 with a run, while Warriner added an RBI. Brown also went 1-for-2 with an RBI for Lycoming.

Kylee Schwind (6-4) earned the win, throwing seven innings of three-hit ball with five strikeouts.

The Warriors return to action on Sunday, April 15, when they head to Hood College for another MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at 1 p.m.
