WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) scored her first two goals of the season and a pair of Warrior keepers earned a shutout victory as the Lycoming College women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season in 3-0 fashion over Gwynedd Mercy on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 3, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
The win gives first-year head coach
Kenny Fern his first collegiate victory while Lazarich's two goals leave her one shy of becoming the first player in school history to post 50 career goals.
After nearly 33 scoreless minutes, junior defender
Allison Edwards (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) scored her first career goal off a free kick from
Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian), giving the freshman her first career point. Gessner crossed the free kick into the box before Edwards fired the ball out of the scrum into the left corner for the 1-0 lead.
Lazarich gave the Warriors (1-1 overall) some breathing room as she scored in the 71
st minute off a nice pass from
Michayla Hazard (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) that bounced off the keeper and Lazarich fired into the empty net for the 2-0 advantage. Then five minutes later, Lazarich put the game out of reach with her second goal when sophomore
Mackaella Goodwin (Madison, N.J./Madison) found the speedy Lazarich running through the middle of the field and Lazarich had a one-on-one with the goalie, firing a shot into the upper left corner to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
Freshman
Madi Welliver (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run), playing in her first career start after recording a state-record 60 career shutouts at Warrior Run High School, made six saves before being replaced by
Helen Ross (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) for the final seven minutes. Kailey Hopkins stopped two shots for the Griffins (0-2 overall), as Lycoming put five of its six shots in the contest on goal.
Lycoming gets back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 9, when they head to Madison, N.J., for the Drew Fall Festival when they play Ramapo at 3 p.m.
