Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Warriors fall to No. 12 Diplomats

LANCASTER, Pa. – A late goal by freshman Steven Riad (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) helped the 10th-ranked Lycoming College men's soccer team pull within a goal of 12th-ranked Franklin & Marshall, but despite three late shots, it could not get an equalizer, falling 2-1, on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 4, at Tylus Field.

Playing a man down, the Warriors (0-1 overall) were able to mount a rally late in the contest, firing four straight shots after falling behind by two goals. Finally, Riad dented the twine with an athletic move from 12 yards out in the 73rd minute, finding the left post after taking in a pass from freshman Zach Raut (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point).

The Warriors fired three more shots, but couldn't get the equalizer, with junior Nathan Harding (Secretary, Md./North Dorcester) firing the team's last effort high over the crossbar after a Lycoming corner.

The Diplomats (2-0 overall) opened the scoring in the 60th minute, with a 2-on-1 breakaway, as Stephen Sherbahn put a shot into the top right corner. Just two and a half minutes later, Jason Tonelli collected a rebounded shot and put it in the top right.

In the first half, both teams were held scoreless, with Lycoming taking two shots and Franklin & Marshall six. In the second half, the Warriors turned into the aggressor, taking 10 shots while holding the Diplomats to six. Lycoming finished the game with eight corner kicks while holding F&M to five.

Sophomore Chris Solecki (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) finished with four saves in his first start of the season for the Warriors. F&M's Dave Reingold (2-0) also stopped four shots to earn the win.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, Sept. 7, when they head to Susquehanna University for the Battle of the Boot. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at Sassafras Field.
