OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior
Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck/Anne Arundel C.C.), the national leader in points per game, led the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team with seven goals, but Stevenson used a late second-half surge to force overtime and post a 13-12 win in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday night, April 13, at Mustang Stadium.
The loss drops the Warriors to 10-2 overall with a 2-2 MAC Commonwealth record, while the Mustangs improved to 5-7 overall and 3-0 in conference.
Sophomore
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and freshman
Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) both scored twice, while Lazarich recorded a game-high three assists as she became the 12
th player in school history to notch 70 points (47 goals and 24 assists) in a season.
Jackson, meanwhile, is a point shy of the school record of 92 in a season, set by Brenda MacPhail in the 2000 season. Jackson, who leads the MAC Commonwealth with 63 goals and 28 assists, has four games to break the record.
The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to two scores from Jackson and one from McGinniss. After the Mustangs scored three of the next five goals, the Warriors responded with three goals in a span of 3:42 to take an 8-3 lead, with two of the goals again coming from Jackson. The Mustangs finished the first half strong, however, scoring the final three goals in a 2:26 span, as the Warriors held an 8-6 halftime lead.
The teams' split the next six goals, as the Warriors were still able to hold a two-goal lead with 12:43 remaining in the second half. After Stevenson scored twice to tie the game at 11, Lazarich scored with just 58 seconds remaining to regain a one-goal lead. But just 27 seconds later, Kellie McLaughlin found Hollie Larrimore for the equalizer to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Molly Gonzalez was awarded a free position opportunity and found the back of the net to win the game for the Mustangs with 49 seconds left in the first 3:00 period.
Lazarich picked up a team-high two ground balls and won six draw controls while McGinniss won a game-high eight draws, as she moved within seven of the school's single-season record of 88 set by Brooke Strausser in 2013.
The Mustangs were led by Brady Heher, who recorded a hat trick and an assist while Gonzalez, Larrimore, and Tori Bruno each scored twice. On defense, Shelby Walter picked up a game-high six ground balls and caused a game-high five turnovers while Carli Bafford and Rachael Akshar both picked up four ground balls, with Akshar causing four turnovers.
Freshman
Megan Bozarth (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla) (0-1) got her first start of the year in net and recorded 10 saves in 62:11 of action. Maggie Lawder (5-7) got the win for the Mustangs, as she made five saves.
The Warriors return to the field on Saturday, April 16, when they host Hood in a MAC Commonwealth matchup at 1 p.m. at Shangraw Athletic Complex.?
