Warriors outduel Wasps in opener, 3-2

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) dropped in a game-winning single to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning and sophomore Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) came within an out of her first career no-hitter on opening day for the Lycoming College softball team, as it scored three runs in the last two innings for a 3-2 win over Emory & Henry at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex on Monday afternoon, March 7.

Shady (1-0) was outstanding in the circle, tossing 6 2/3 innings of no-hit softball before a Texas Leaguer blooped in to left field by Hannah Bays tied the game in the top of the seventh. Pinch-runner Holly Britt was caught stealing to cap off her one-hitter and end the threat.

The Warriors rallied in the bottom of the inning, as senior Ashley Burger (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) led off with a walk, but was caught stealing. However, senior Chelsey Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) followed with another walk and she took second on a passed ball before Schoenstadt delivered her game-winning hit.

Down 1-0 heading into the sixth inning, the Warriors rallied to take the lead when Schoenstadt led off the inning with a single to left field. A sac bunt by senior Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) moved Schoenstadt up a base, where she scored on a single up the middle from Shady. Senior Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) and junior Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) each followed with walks to load the bases before senior Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) grounded a ball to third, but the throw to the plate was dropped to let Shady score the go-ahead run.

Emory & Henry (3-8 overall) tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Danielle Loving drew a one-out walk before she stole second. After a strikeout, Bays' blooper tied the game.

The Wasps took the lead in the first inning when Riley Pudney led off with a walk, took second on a groundout and third on a passed ball before scoring on a grounder that tipped off Shady's glove, forcing her to make the only play at first base.

After that, Shady allowed just four more baserunners, retiring 12 in a row until Loving's walk in the seventh. She finished with five strikeouts and three walks, allowing just one earned run in her sixth career complete game.

Taylor Banner (2-5) took the loss for the Wasps, as she allowed one hit, two walks and an unearned run in an inning of relief. Kaitlyn Pruitt started the game, allowing three hits, four walks and one earned run in 5 1/3 innings. She struck out five.

Schoenstadt led the Warrior offense, finishing 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Novak went 1-for-2 with a sac bunt, as all four Lycoming hits came from the first three batters in the lineup. Weaver added two walks in the cleanup slot.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, March 8, with two games in North Myrtle Beach's Central Park, facing Anna Maria at 11:30 a.m. and Sweet Briar at 1:30 p.m.
