OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior
Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) continued her torrid hitting with three hits on Friday, March 25, but the Lycoming College softball team fell to Stevenson University in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader, 5-4 and 8-4, at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.
Kunes extended her hitting streak to eight games and game reached base to 16, as she notched three hits in six at bats, including her ninth double of the year, just three from the school record.
Stevenson (5-11 overall, 2-2 MAC Commonwealth) hit .417 (5-of-12) with runners on base in the first game, while Lycoming (9-8 overall, 0-4 MAC Commonwealth) left 12 runners on base and brought the winning run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but Lycoming wasn't able to complete the rally in a 5-4 loss.

The Mustangs got on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to two hits, two walks and a hit batter. The Warriors closed within a run in the fourth inning, stringing together three hits in the inning. Crabb singled with one out and senior
Chelsea Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) followed with an infield single. After an out, senior
Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) singled up the middle to load the bases before a wild pitch helped pinch-runner
Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) score.
Stevenson added a run in the fourth thanks to three hits before scoring two more to make it 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to RBI doubles from Kristen Mueller and Sabrina Gordon.
Novak and Crabb each had two hits for the Warriors to lead the team, which wrapped eight hits in the game. Erin Stephey led the Mustangs, going 2-for-3 with two runs.
Sophomore
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) (4-3) tossed six innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs. She struck out three and walked two. Brooke Steinbach (1-4) earned the win for the Mustangs, as she pitched seven innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs. She walked three and struck out three.
Lycoming wrapped eight more hits in the second game, led by two each from sophomore
Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley), Shady and Kunes, but Stevenson scored six runs in the second and third innings to post an 8-4 win.
Kristen Mueller led off Stevenson's first inning with a triple before scoring on a sac fly to take an early lead, and the Mustangs added three more runs in the second thanks to three hits and three errors.
The Warriors got on the board in the top of the third, as Poorman started the rally with a single to left field before Schoenstadt singled up the middle. A throwing error on the next play on a failed fielder's choice allowed both runners to score to make it 4-2.
The Mustangs responded in the third, though, using three more hits and an error to score three more runs to make it 7-4. The Warriors got a run back in the fourth, as Kunes singled to lead off. She took second on an infield single by sophomore
Heather Secord (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) and Crabb walked to load the bases. After a pair of fielder's choices cut runners down at home, Schoenstadt smashed an infield single.
Stevenson added one more run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-3. Lycoming didn't go quietly in the seventh, as Weaver walked with two outs before pinch-running freshman
Cayla Treaster (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Kunes.
Schoenstadt led the Warriors, going 2-for-4 with a run and RBI, Kunes went 2-for-4 with a RBI and Shady also went 2-for-4.
Tiffany Kahl led the Mustangs, as she went 2-for-2 with two runs and a stolen base and Mueller went 2-for-4 with a run, RBI and a triple.
Jasmyn Ogletree (3-5) earned the win for the Mustangs, going five innings and allowing seven hits and two earned runs. She walked one and struck out one. Weaver (4-4) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing 10 hits, a walk and five earned runs in her seventh complete game of the season.
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, March 29, when they host Wilkes in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
