Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) and sophomore 174-pounder
Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) each went a perfect 3-0 to lead the Lycoming College wrestling team at a quad meet at Wesleyan College on Sunday, Feb. 14, as the team defeated Oswego, 37-9 and Norwich, 40-9, before falling to Wesleyan, 21-16.
The trio accounted for 47 of the team's 93 points during the day, while sophomore 184-pounder
Brandon Rudy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) also went 2-0 to add six more points, as the heart of the lineup led the team to the two wins.
Barger improved to 28-0 with the three wins, which all came via first-period pins to help him take over the team lead with 11 falls, which is tied for 10
th-best in school history. Lansberry improved to 32-2 on the season and 98-18 in his career, as he moved into fifth-place alone in program history with 98 wins, leaving him two shy of becoming the fifth wrestler in program history to reach 100 career wins. He also joined Rob Cosper '00 as the only Warriors in program history to post three seasons with 30 or more wins.
Conrad, meanwhile, improved to 33-10 overall, with the Warrior moving into a tie for 11
th in school history in single-season wins.
The Warriors (14-7 overall) started out the meet with a dominating 37-9 win over Oswego (4-13 overall), posting bonus point wins in five matches to cruise to the win.
After sophomore
Kyle Drick (Allenwood, Pa./Montgomery Area) opened with a decision at 125 pounds, freshman
Andy Aguilar (Muncy, Pa./Muncy Area) added a major decision at 133 and freshman
Joe Santomarco (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) posted a decision at 141 to give Lycoming a 10-0 lead. Lansberry followed with a pin and after a win by Oswego at 157, Barger and Conrad added pins to give Lycoming a 28-4 lead. A technical fall win by Oswego at 184 was followed by a forfeit win for the Warriors at 197 and a decision by senior
Max Lamport (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) at heavyweight rounded out the scoring.
The Warriors continued to roll against Norwich (6-8 overall), posting five pins and six bonus-point wins to notch the 40-9 win.
After Norwich opened the meet with a pin, Aguilar and Santomarco posted pins at 133 and 141 pounds before Lansberry notched a 9-1 major decision against James Duncan at 149. Senior
Matt Neff (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) posted his 50
th career win at 157 pounds with a 12-6 win over Ben Swanson, and Barger and Conrad continued the run at the next two weight classes with first-period wins. Rudy capped the 34-point run with a decision at 184 pounds. After a decision by Norwich at 197, freshman
Tom Lynd (Woodbury Heights, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) added another first-period pin to round out the meet.
Wesleyan was able to narrowly defeat the Warriors, with the match coming down to heavyweight, where Isaiah Bellamy, an honorable mention grappler in d3wrestle.com's rankings, notched a 3-2 decision to defeat Lamport and give the Cardinals a 21-16 win.
Wesleyan opened up a 9-0 lead through the first three matches before Lansberry notched an 8-0 major decision against Carter Armendarez at 149. After Wesleyan earned a major decision at 157, the Warriors fought back to take a 16-13 lead, as Barger posted a pin of Roy Forys at 165, Conrad downed Taran Carr, a contender in the d3wrestle.com rankings, 6-0, at 174, and Rudy added a huge 5-4 win over Keonmin Hwang at 184. However, Wesleyan won the final two bouts to take the meet and snap a four-meet win streak by the Warriors.
The Warriors will now have two weeks off before getting on the mat for the NCAA Mideast Regional at Lamade Gym on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27-28.
