DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – For the sixth straight game, the Lycoming College football team fought to a one-possession final score, but a last-minute game-tying drive ended with an interception in the end zone to help lift Delaware Valley to a 28-20 Middle Atlantic Conference win on Saturday, Nov. 5, at James Work Memorial Stadium.
Delaware Valley (7-2 overall, 6-2 MAC) appeared poised to take a three touchdown lead early in the third quarter, but sophomore
Khamari Williams (Gaithersburg, Md./The Avalon School) dove to pick off a pass in the end zone to stop a drive. The turnover led to a Lycoming rally, as the Warriors came within a touchdown in the third quarter, when a muffed punt recovery led to a recovery by sophomore
Joe Pinzka (Perkasie, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) at the 17-yard line. Lycoming scored on the next play, as senior
Chase Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) found freshman
Dante Gipson (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) for the score to make it 21-14 with 2:55 left in the period.
After the Warriors (3-6 overall, 2-6 MAC) stopped Delaware Valley on the next possession, the Warrior offense got rolling again, driving 76 yards on 15 plays. Gipson ran for 36 yards on eight carries and the team converted three third downs on the drive before Whiteman found sophomore
Mike Mulvihill (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) for a leaping nine-yard score in the right corner of the end zone to bring Lycoming within a point after the game-tying extra point attempt hit the upright.
The Aggies responded with a nine-play, 65-yard drive, with a Darshawn Darden 20-yard rush keying the drive before he scored from three yards out to cap the drive and make it 28-20. The Warriors quickly appeared to respond when junior
Aaron Davis (Sayreville, N.J./Syareville War Memorial) returned a kickoff for a touchdown, but a holding penalty negated the touchdown. The Warriors still fought through the setback to drive the ball to the 19-yard line, but Jalan Mayes leaped up in front of Gipson in the end zone with 41 seconds left to get an interception and seal the win.
After stopping Delaware Valley on its opening drive, the Warriors rolled 70 yards in nine plays to take the early lead, with junior
Sam Dressler (Riverside, Pa./Danville) rushing four times for 17 yards and Mulvihill posting a 36-yard reception to start the drive. Whiteman crashed in from third-and-goal from the four for the touchdown.
Delaware Valley got even in the second quarter, when Darden found Eric Shorter on a post route behind the last defender and Shorter scored on the 80-yard reception with 10:50 left in the quarter. The Aggies took the lead with their next drive, as Devauntay Ellis broke through the line and scored on another 80-yard run to make it 14-7 with 7:59 left.
The Aggies added one more score in the half, with Robert Cleveland plowing into the end zone from four yards out with 47 seconds left to cap an eight-play, 84-yard drive to make it 21-7 at the break.
The Warriors were outgained 494-295, but took advantage of Delaware Valley's miscues in in the second half to get back into the game. Whiteman finished 12-of-25 for 136 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted twice and he also ran 13 times for 62 yards and a score. Mulvihill caught five passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. Gipson rushed 17 times for 56 yards and caught four passes for 48 yards and a score.
Darden led the Aggies, completing 15-of-25 passing for 263 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted twice, but also rushed 13 times for 43 yards and a score. Shorter caught two passes for 106 yards and a score and Ellis rushed 13 times for 155 yards and a score.
Junior
Mike Ward (Edgewater, Md./South River) led the Warriors with 11 tackles and Williams finished with seven tackles and an interceptions. Senior
Zach Smith (Elliottsburg, Pa./West Perry) notched five tackles, 2.5 for loss and one interception.
Mayes finished with six tackles, two pass breakups and an interception to lead the Aggies and T.J. Waters finished with 12 tackles. Shawn Miller added a tackle and a 43-yard interception return.
The Warriors wrap up the 2016 season on Saturday, Nov. 12, when they host No. 12 Stevenson for Senior Day at David Person Field at 1 p.m.
