Warriors sweep N.Y./Pa. Duals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With bonus-point wins in 11 of its 20 matches on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 3, the Lycoming College wrestling team dominated its way through the N.Y./Pa. Duals at Lamade Gym, posting a 37-5 win over SUNY Oswego and a 33-12 win over RIT. In the process, both juniors 149-pounder Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) and 165-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) each won their 80th career matches.

The pair were two of six Warriors to sweep their varsity matches, with sophomore Kyle Drick (Allenwood, Pa./Montgomery Area) (125), sophomore Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) (174), sophomore Brandon Rudy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) (184) and junior Skylar Ebner (Muncy, Pa./Muncy Area) (197) also swept their matches, helping the Warriors (8-3 overall) sweep the N.Y./Pa. Duals for the third straight year and the eight time in nine years.

Lansberry became the 21st wrestler in Lycoming's history to reach 80 wins to pace the Warriors in the 37-5 win over Oswego (2-4 overall), as he was one of two Warriors to secure a pin and one of five to earn bonus points in the match.

Drick started the match with a 14-5 major decision at 125 pounds before Oswego took the lead, 5-4, with a technical fall at 133. The Warriors didn't lose another match in the dual, with freshman Joe Santomarco (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) pinned Jonathan Ptacek in 2:41 at 141 before Lansberry picked up his pin in 1:58 against Steven Culbert to give Lycoming a 16-5 lead.

Senior Matt Neff (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) (157), Barger, Conrad and Rudy kept the Warriors rolling with decision wins before a forfeit at 197 pounds gave Lycoming a 34-5 lead. Senior Max Lamport (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) improved to 7-2 on the season, tying his career-high for wins, with a 3-1 sudden victory win against Kade Andrews.

The Warriors added five more bonus-point wins in the 32-12 win over RIT (1-5 overall), with the team picking up a major decision, two technical falls, a fall and a forfeit win.

The Warriors never trailed in the dual, with Drick picking up a 2-1 decision over George Bardanis at 125 pounds and freshman Andy Aguilar (Muncy, Pa./Muncy Area) adding a 12-0 major decision in the 133-pound match over Isaiah Ocasio in his first match since mid-November to give Lycoming a 7-0 lead.

After a loss at 141, Lansberry picked up a defensive pin at 149 pounds against Dempsey King in the second period, starting the period on bottom and then slowly pulling up to his feet while grabbing onto King's leg and putting both shoulders on the mat, giving Lycoming a 13-3 lead.

RIT closed within four points with a fall at 157, but Barger picked up his 80th career win with a 15-0 technical fall of Joe Cutugno at 165 and Conrad added a 14-6 major decision over John Donahue at 174 to expand the lead to 22-9. Rudy followed with a first-period 18-0 technical fall over McKenzie Callahan and a forfeit at 197 rounded out Lycoming's scoring.

The Warriors will now get set for the 16-team Budd Whitehill National Duals in Lamade Gym on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 8-9. The brackets for the duals will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 5, and the tournament will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday.
