WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) delivered both goals for the Lycoming College women's soccer team, the second in the 95
th minute to give the team a 2-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy University in non-conference action at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Â
Lazarich scored off a broken play, as senior
Katie Cox (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) pitched a ball into the goal box that the Gwynedd Mercy keeper looked to corral as Lazarich charged in. Lazarich knocked it off to the side and then fired a shot into the right corner, giving Lycoming (1-1 overall) its first win of the year.
Â
The Warriors and Griffins (1-1 overall) had many close calls throughout the game, with Lycoming's freshman goalkeeper
Helen Ross (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) (1-1) finishing with eight saves in her first career win and Gwynedd Mercy's Jess Tadley (1-1) finishing with 11 stops.
Â
The Griffins had their best chance to break the 1-1 tie in the 62
nd minute, as they used a corner to get two point blank shots off, the second of which Ross saved while on the ground, before a third shot rolled wide.
Â
Lycoming controlled much of the half after that, getting in their best position to score with 6:58 left, as it was awarded a penalty shot, but Tadley stopped the shot, setting up the overtime period and dramatic finish. Â
Â
Gwynedd Mercy got on the board early in the first half, scoring in just the third minute, as Jackie Pierson fired in a shot from close range.
Â
Lycoming's offense began to wake up after that, getting some quality chances before they finally found the equalizer in the 17
th minute when senior
Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) found
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), who beat her last defender and fired a shot from 12 yards out into the left corner of the net for her 15
th career score.
Â
The two-goal game is the fourth of Lazarich's career, while Jackson and Cox each tallied assists in the win. Lycoming posted a 17-16 advantage in shots and each team earned five corner kicks.
Â
The Warriors will stay at home for another game on Sunday, Sept. 6, when they host Keystone for a 12 p.m. match at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
