Shady throws shutout as Warriors split with Lions

READING, Pa. – Freshman Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) tossed a two-hit shutout in the second game to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a Commonwealth Conference split with Albright College on a sun-soaked Monday, April 6, at the Albright Softball Complex, as Lycoming won the second contest, 5-0, after falling, 3-1, in the first.

Junior Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) extended her hitting streak to 12 games after going 3-for-7 with a run, a double and two RBI, tying for the fourth-longest hitting streak in school history with Susan Leuthner (April 5-19, 1997). The eight doubles this season are already tied for fifth in the program's record book, while her 23 career two-baggers are one shy of Jessica Feerrar's mark of 24 set from 2000-03, which is second in the school's record book.

Shady (1-2) rolled through the Lions (10-7 overall, 4-6 Commonwealth) in the second game, allowing just two hits and two walks, as just two runners reached second base in the game and none got to third. She struck out three in her first career win.

The Warriors (10-8 overall, 3-5 Commonwealth) got started in the first inning, as freshman Heather Secord (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) singled to center field to lead off. A sacrifice bunt moved her into scoring position before Weaver blasted a double down the left-field line to give the Warriors the lead.

In the fourth inning, the Warriors added two more runs, as sophomore Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) reached on an error to lead off before moving to second on an infield single by Shady. With two outs, senior Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge Area) lifted a two-RBI double to left field to score both runners.

In the fifth inning, the Warriors put the game out of reach, as freshman Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) reached on an error before she stole second. Weaver followed with an RBI single up the middle. She took second on the throw, third on a groundout and scored on a single to center field by sophomore Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg).

Secord went 2-for-4 with a run and Weaver went 2-for-4 with a run, a double and two RBI to pace the Warriors' seven-hit attach.

Kaela Romano and Sammi O'Connor had the lone hits for the Lions.

Riley Gerenda (5-3), the Commonwealth Conference leader with a 0.40 ERA, allowed seven hits, two earned runs and a walk in the loss. She struck out three.

In the first game, the Warriors scratched a run across in the sixth inning, but left the bases loaded as Albright was able to sneak away with the 3-1 win.

Crabb led the Warriors in the game, going 2-for-3, but O'Connor (5-4) tossed a four-hitter and struck out nine in the complete game to help the Lions post the win.

Albright got on the board in the second inning with two unearned runs and added one more in the fourth thanks to an RBI double from Regina Milburn.

O'Connor had held the Warriors just two base runners through the first five innings before the team rallied in the sixth inning, when Shady posted a two-out single up the middle. Weaver followed with an opposite field single before both Kunes and Secord drew walks, with the second walk driving in Shady. However, a pop-out ended the threat.

Weaver (4-4) took the loss for the Warriors, as she allowed six hits and just one earned run in the complete game. She struck out five and walked one.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, when they head to Susquehanna University for the Cancer Awareness Cup. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
