Layser moves up to finish 19th at Commonwealth Championship

HERSHEY, Pa. – Junior Zach Layser (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) fired an 83 in the second round of the Commonwealth Conference Championship to move up three slots on the leaderboard and finish tied for 19th at the two-day, 36-hole event at the par-71, 6,482-yard Hershey Country Club East Course on Sunday morning, April 26.

The Warriors got two final round 88's from seniors Nic McGee (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) and John Koch (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) and senior Will Dietz (Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield) rounded out the scoring on Sunday with a 96.

The score of 355 was identical to the first round score for the team, as its two-day total of 710 is the best for the Warriors since the tournament returned to a 36-hole format in 2008. Messiah College ran away with the team title, posting a score of 624 over the two-day tournament, finishing 23 strokes ahead of Stevenson.

Layser's 83 is the best score for the Warriors at the meet since McGee fired an 82 in the second round at the 2012 Commonwealth Conference Championship. McGee, like Layser, also had a 169 at the event in 2012.

Layser carded a 5-over par 40 on the back nine to start the round on Sunday, as he birdied the par-4, 409-yard No. 15 and added five pars during the day.

McGee tied for 26th with a two-day score of 174 (86-88) while Koch moved up the leaderboard with a second day 88 after a first day 95 to finish with a 183 in 37th place. Dietz fired a two-day score of 184 (88-96) to finish right behind Koch in 38th. Freshman Jesse Treur (Zuidoostbeemster, Netherlands/DaVinci College Purmerend) rounded out the team's entrants at the tournament, as he finished 44th with a two-day 204 (107-97).

Stevenson's Al El Kordi-Hubabrd won the individual medallist honors, firing a 150 (74-76) during the two-day tournament.
