WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior
Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) notched a hit in each end of Thursday, April 23's doubleheader with King's College, including the 25
th double of her career, but King's was able to edge out the Lycoming College softball team, 5-4 in the first game and 3-2 in the second, to sweep non-conference action at the Betzler Complex.
The two hits gives Weaver 38 on the season, just four from the school record of 42 held jointly by Jess Nabholz (2010) and Jeanine Evans (1999) with four games remaining. Her 25 doubles are one shy of the school record of 26 held by Nabholz (2007-10).
In the first game, both freshman
Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) and senior
Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) each added two hits in the first game, but a three-run fifth inning helped King's take the 5-4 decision.
King's jumped out to a two-run lead in the first game with two runs on three hits in the first inning, but the Warriors rallied to tie the game in the third. Senior
Hannah Smith (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) walked to lead off before Schenstadt singled. After a sac bunt, Weaver delivered a two-RBI double to left field.
In the fifth, the Warriors took the lead when Schoenstadt singled to center field, then came around to score on an error in the outfield. In the bottom of the inning, though, the Monarchs used doubles from Debra Renner and Alizabeth Ellsworth to score three runs and take the 5-3 lead.
The Warriors got within a run in the sixth, as Marianelli singled to lead off and moved to second on a sac bunt. After freshman
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) was hit with a pitch, a fielder's choice moved her up to second, where she scored on a single by Smith.
That was as close as Lycoming could get, though, as King's left three Warriors stranded in the last two innings.
Renner led the Monarchs, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and Kowalczyk scored two runs. Ellsworth went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Robyn Klingerman (4-2) earned the win for the Monarchs, allowing four hits and one earned run in three innings. Shady (3-5) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing three earned runs and six hits in five innings.
In the second game, senior
Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (6-4) allowed six hits and one earned run in a complete game, but King's used two unearned runs to post the 3-2 win.
Allison Herbert (3-3) tossed a four-hitter for King's, allowing two walks and striking out two to earn the win.
The Warriors took the lead in the first inning when Schoenstadt drew a lead off bunt, moved to second on a passed ball and scored when Weaver reached on an error.
The Monarchs took the lead in the third, scoring three runs on three hits and two errors, with Ellsworth delivering a two-RBI double to highlight the inning.
Lycoming closed within a run in the sixth inning, as senior
Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) reached on an error, moved to second on a groundout, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Marianelli.
Samantha Bloom led the Monarchs, going 2-for-3.
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, April 25, when they host Stevenson in a 1 p.m. Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.
