READING, Pa. – Sophomore
Jordan Logan (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) scored in each half to lift the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 2-1 road win over Alvernia University in MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday night, Oct. 17, helping Lycoming extend its unbeaten streak to a school-record 13 games.
Â
The Warriors improved to 11-1-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the MAC Commonwealth to open up a four-point lead on first place in the conference thanks to a 3-0 Messiah win over Arcadia, giving Messiah nine points in the league and Arcadia eight.
Â
Lycoming's 13-game unbeaten streak surpasses the previous-best marks of 12 set from Oct. 24, 1991-Sept. 30, 1992 and Aug. 29-Oct. 4, 2014.
Â
Logan scored his 12
th goal of the year to provide the game-winner in a tightly-contested second half, as Lycoming used great teamwork to get the goal. Sophomore
Mateo Velasquez (Scotrun, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) fired a quick through ball in to sophomore
Kyle Thomas (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), who headed the ball over for Logan, who headed it into the center of the net in the 59
th minute.
Â
The game-winner was Logan's sixth of the year, the third-best mark in program history behind both Chris Lorenzet (2008) and Jeff Kocher (2005).
Â
Alvernia (6-4-5 overall, 1-2-1 MAC Commonwealth) was only able to get one shot after that, with the shot rolling wide of the net, as Lycoming held on for the win thanks to a great defensive effort, as the team allowed just seven shots in the game.
Â
In the first half, Logan gave Lycoming the lead in the seventh minute as he took a pass from Velasquez in front of the net and drilled in a shot. The Crusaders tied the game in the 32
nd minute, though, with Andrew Baylor finding the back of the net on a pass from Metuge Esong, setting up the second half.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Josh Gildea (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) (9-1-2) finished with three saves to earn the win for the Warriors. Zach Rider (6-4-5) also stopped three of Lycoming's nine shots for Alvernia.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when they head to Lebanon Valley for a 3:30 p.m. MAC Commonwealth matchup.
