Warriors upended by Pioneers

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Junior Katie Cox (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) headed in the first goal of her career with the Lycoming College women's soccer team, but Utica College was able to score once in each half to spoil the 2014 season opener for the Warriors, who fell, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 30, in the finale of the first day of the Erinn K. Brozman Cup at Hartwick College's Elmore Field.
 
The Warriors (0-1 overall) started the game well, with the team drawing a corner kick in the third minute. Junior Nour Hasan (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) lofted the ensuing kick into the box, where Cox finished off the play with a score.
 
Utica (1-0 overall) tied the game, though in the 20th minute on a score by Ciara McIlvenney. In the second half, Amanda Pawlikowski scored in the 63rd minute to help the Pioneers capture the win.
 
Both teams fired 11 shots, with Kelly Heimerle forced into making five saves for the Pioneers to earn the win. Freshman Joelle Winey (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) stopped two shots in her debut.
 
The Warriors also drew six corners while not allowing one.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Sunday, Aug. 31, when they face Hartwick at 12:30 p.m. in the final game of the Erinn K. Brozman Cup.
