Maguire posts nine points as Warriors drop close one to Ferrum

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior Casey Maguire (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) notched a career-high nine points thanks to six goals and three assists to lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team, but Ferrum used three goals in the last 151 seconds to steal a 17-16 non-conference win at Ashley Booth Field on a rainy Wednesday, March 5.
 
Maguire helped spark the Warriors (0-2 overall) on a 7-1 run that lasted between the two halves, as she found the back of the net with 2:28 left in the first half to help the Warriors head into the break down by two goals at 9-7.
 
In the second half, the Warriors scored three goals in the first eight minutes to take their first lead of the game, with senior Maureen Heagy (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) scoring first before McGuire tied the game with 23:48 left and then found sophomore Savannah Fox (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville for a score just over a minute later. After a Ferrum goal tied the score at 10, the Warriors continued their run, with Fox scoring two of the next three goals, the last giving the team a 13-10 lead with 17:00 left.
 
The Warriors held at least a two-goal lead from then until the 3:55 mark, when Courtney Hamm scored a goal to make it 15-14. After the Panthers (3-3 overall) won the draw, the Warriors got a huge ground ball pickup by freshman Leanne Shaw (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford), which started a Warrior possession, which was finished when Maguire found senior Amber Graybill (Pasadena, Md./Pasadena) for a score with 2:54 left, giving Lycoming a 16-14 lead.
 
The Panthers won the next two draws, though, and scored on both chances to tie the game with 1:47 left. The Warriors won the next draw, though, as junior Alysha Conley (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) picked up the ball to set up a Warrior possession, but Ferrum keeper Amanda Cheney came up with a save with 1:09 left. Ferrum was able to clear the ball and Hamm scored the game-winner with eight ticks left.
 
The first half was close, but Ferrum was able to keep control throughout the period, scoring the first two goals and allowing Lycoming to tie just once at two. The Warriors only let the lead get to three goals once, at 9-6, with 6:09 left, setting up the Warriors' between halves run.
 
Fox finished with four goals, an assist and two draw controls and Heagy posted two goals for the Warriors. Junior Kari Rybak (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) added a goal, an assist, three ground balls and three draw controls and junior Liz Francescone (Cream Ridge, N.J./Notre Dame) added three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
Hamm led the Panthers with five goals and an assist and Caila Cummings added four goals, two assists and 10 draw controls. Shannon Brown posted three goals, two assists and eight draw controls and Sydney Hewartson posted two goals and four assists. Lauren Blankenship posted six ground balls.
 
In net, freshman goalkeeper Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) (0-2) stopped 14 shots and grabbed five ground balls in the game for the Warriors. Amanda Cheney (3-3) made eight stops in the win for the Panthers.
 
The Warriors will now return to the North, as they get set for a 12 p.m. game at Elmira on Saturday, March 8.
