No. 23 Warriors shut down Crusaders, 1-0

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Perhaps it was fitting that on the day that senior Connor Keenan (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) tied the school's career record for shutouts, he didn't have to make a save. It speaks to the stifling Lycoming College men's soccer team's defense, as the 23rd-ranked team allowed just six shots, none on goal, en route to a 1-0 win in the Commonwealth Conference opener on a beautiful Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Keenan notched his 17th career shutout to tie the school record held by David Kidd (1991-94) and Jason Fesler (2001-04), as the Lycoming posted its ninth shutout of the year to improve to 9-0-3 overall and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Conference. The team's 12-game stretch without a loss is a school-record, surpassing a nine-game winning streak in 2003.

Playing without two regular starters due to red cards in their last game, the Warriors were still able to manage play throughout the contest with the Crusaders (5-5-1 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth), who were selected to finish tied for third with the Warriors in the conference's preseason poll, as the team didn't allow one shot on net in the contest to secure the first win over Alvernia in school history in six meetings.

Lycoming took 10 shots in the game and connected late, when freshman defender Kyle Thomas (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) found the lower right corner with a header off a give from freshman Jordan Logan (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) in the 66th minute.

Zach Rider finished with four saves in net for the Crusaders.

The Warriors will face their biggest test of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 8, when they head to No. 1-ranked Messiah, the defending national champions, for a 7 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game.
