Warriors score twice in final 16 to beat Mustangs, 3-1

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Two goals in the final 16 minutes helped lift the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 3-1 Commonwealth Conference win over Stevenson University on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 28, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex, helping the Warriors clinch their second straight berth into the Commonwealth Conference Tournament, which begins next week.

The Warriors (13-2-3 overall, 5-2 Commonwealth) stayed in second place in the conference with the win and lock up a Commonwealth Conference semifinal home game with a win or a tie in the season finale against Widener.

Stevenson (10-7-2 overall, 1-4-2 Commonwealth) tied the game at one in the 73rd minute, as Yianni Sarioglou scored off a deflected shot, but the Warriors responded quickly, with freshman Nathan Harding (Secretary, Md./North Dorcester) getting a quick clearing pass near midfield. Harding blew past the last defender and drove into the goal from the left side, lifting his shot up over the keeper to dent the twice less than 90 seconds after the Stevenson goal.

Freshman Abdullahi Abdi (Seattle, Wash./James Garfield) sealed the win in the 82nd minute, drawing a foul in the box and then converting the penalty kick.

Stevenson got the first great opportunity in the first 15th minute, drawing a foul in the box off a corner kick, but the penalty kick was saved with a dive to his left by senior Connor Keenan (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East).

The Warriors got on the board in the 19th minute when sophomore Bill Kerr (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) got a free kick opportunity from 30 yards out and he drilled a laser into the upper netting.

Lycoming had an opportunity to extend the lead in the half, as a foul was called in the Stevenson box to set up a penalty kick, but Stevenson keeper Ryan Callinan made a save to his left, setting up the dramatic finish in the second half.

The Warriors fired 18 shots in the game, while the Mustangs fired 13, as Callinan stopped six shots in the loss and Keenan stopped five in the win.

The Warriors get back on the field with Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 1, when they host Widener in a Commonwealth Conference game at 2:30 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
