Warriors drop pair to Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Despite pounding out 19 hits during the doubleheader, the Lycoming College softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Commonwealth Conference foe Elizabethtown College, 5-4 in nine innings in the first game, and 8-2 in the second game, on Saturday, April 20, at The Nest.
 
In the first game, the Warriors (13-17 overall, 2-12 Commonwealth) scored in four separate innings, but two big rallies, including scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth, were enough to lead the Blue Jays (16-16 overall, 6-8 Commonwealth) to a 5-4 win.
 
Lycoming took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning, as sophomore Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) reached on an error and took second on a sac bunt. After a flyout and a walk, she scored on a single by her senior sister, Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge).
 
The Warriors tied the game in the top of the sixth after a three-run Elizabethtown fifth inning. Allyson Marianelli reached on a single and senior Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) added a single to center. Senior Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) followed with a walk to load the bases before senior Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) singled to left to drive in a run.
 
However, the Blue Jays rallied in the ninth inning, as a bunt single by Becky Becher and an error led to an RBI single to center by Lindsey Cooper. A wild pitch scored Whitney Beneman with the winning run.
 
Lycoming got on the board in the second inning, as freshman Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) singled to right before freshman Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) doubled her in with a blast to left center. They added one more run in the fifth, as Lansberry reached after getting hit by a pitch. An error helped her take third with one out and after a walk, she scored on a sac fly, setting up Elizabethtown’s three-run bottom half to get back into the game.
 
Lansberry finished 2-for-5 with a run and Lesser went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Allyson Marianelli went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI to lead the Warriors.
 
Breneman went scored two runs and drove in three thanks to a three-run homer in the fifth. Cooper went 2-for-4 with a run and Elly McCarthy also added two hits and a RBI.
 
Justyna Pekowski (2-0) took the win in relief for the Blue Jays, as she went three innings and allowed two hits, three walks and one unearned run. Lansberry (6-6) took the loss, going 8 1/3 innings and allowing eight hits and three earned runs. She struck out one and walked three.
 
In the second game, the Blue Jays used a pair of three-run innings to post an 8-2 win, helping to hold off a nine-hit effort from the Warriors.
 
Lycoming got on the board in the second inning, as Weaver doubled to right with one out. She took third on a single to left by sophomore Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) before scoring on a sac fly by Allyson Marianelli.
 
In the bottom of the second, the Blue Jays scored three runs thanks to four hits and two walks. In the third, they added two more thanks to four hits, taking a 5-1 lead.
 
Lycoming cut the lead to three runs in the fifth inning, as Cline singled with one out and took second on an illegal pitch. After a pop out, she scored on a single by senior Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area).
 
The Blue Jays, though, closed out the game with a three-run sixth inning, using two walks and two hits to score the runs.
 
Cline went 2-for-4 with a run and Poorman went 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead the Warriors. Sophomore Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) also added two hits.
 
McCarthy went 3-for-4 with three runs and a RBI and Kaylee Werner went 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
 
Keli Krause (8-7) took the win in relief for the Blue Jays, as she allowed five hits and a run in 5 1/3 innings. She struck out six. Lapano (5-9) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing seven runs, eight hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings. She struck out two.
 
The Warriors get back in action with Senior Day on Sunday, April 21, when they face Stevenson in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
