Crusaders upend Warriors with late goal

READING, Pa. –  A goal by Alvernia University in the 89th minute helped lead it past the Lycoming College men's soccer team, 1-0, in Commonwealth Conference action at Schlager Memorial Field on Saturday evening, Oct. 19.
 
The Crusaders (5-8-1 overall, 2-2-1 Commonwealth) got the goal after a free kick was called in the 89th minute, with Matt Reinoehl setting up Tyler Reinoehl, who headed it in.
 
The Warriors (7-5-2 overall, 2-2-1 Commonwealth) had plenty of chances throughout the game, as both teams took eight shots in the game. In the 33rd minute, the Warriors had a penalty kick, but Alvernia's David Giannini made a diving save.
 
In the second half, the Warriors got a solid opportunity, when sophomore Nick Neverman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) lifted a corner kick to the head of senior Connor McNiff (Marietta, Pa./Conegal), but Giannini made a beautiful leaping save to ensure the shutout.
 
After Alvernia scored, the Warriors got one more corner and lifted another shot on goal, but Giannini again held strong.
 
In net, senior Connor Keenan (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) posted three saves. Giannini stopped four shots for the Crusaders.
 
The Warriors get back in action against second-ranked Messiah on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 22, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
