Warriors fall late to Crusaders in River Derby

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Freshman Kaitlyn Gulotta (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) scored the first goal of the season for the Lycoming College women’s soccer team, but a pair of late goals helped Susquehanna University retain the River Derby Cup, edging out the Warriors, 2-1, on Thursday night, Sept. 6, at the Sassafras Fields.
 
The Crusaders (3-0 overall) tied the game in with just 2:32 remaining after the Warriors (0-3 overall) led the game for more than 75 minutes when Marissa DeParto found the back of the net. With just 19 seconds left, Jessica Takats kicked in a rebound to give the Crusaders their fifth River Derby win.
 
Lycoming got on the board in the 12th minute, as Gulotta fired a shot into the upper left corner of the net. The Warriors were able to keep pressure on the Crusaders, taking a season-high nine shots, led by four from junior Spencer Larson (Edgewater, Md./South River).
 
The Crusaders also kept pressure on, as they took three shots, two that were saved and one that hit the crossbar in a 10-minute period before the 75-minute mark.
 
In net, junior Caitlin Dougherty (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) made five saves for the Warriors. Rachel Norbuts stopped one shot to earn the win for Susquehanna.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Sunday, Sept. 9, when they host No. 1 William Smith at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 1 p.m.
