Gear reaches milestone as Warriors drop conference opener to Falcons

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) became the 17th player in school history to reach 500 career kills for the Lycoming College volleyball team, but Commonwealth Conference favorite Messiah downed Lycoming, 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-16), in the league opener for both teams on Wednesday night, Sept. 5.
 
Gear posted four kills, five digs and two blocks and senior Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area) led the Warriors (2-1 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth) with six kills and a .385 hitting percentage.
 
Sophomore Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area) added five kills, junior Kaitlin McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) posted 19 assists, three aces and six digs and sophomore Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) notched 12 digs and two aces. Freshman Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York Area) added seven digs, two aces and three kills.
 
Messiah (3-2 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) hit.375 in the first set and .351 in the third, helping it never trail by more than a point in either set. In the second set, the Warriors used a 10-1 run to take a 16-11 lead thanks to three points off the service of Richardson and five from Gear. Sutton led the run with two kills. However, Messiah closed the set on a 14-3 run to take the 25-19 win.
 
Messiah was led by 14 kills and 12 digs from Lauren Rees. Jordyn Schieb added seven kills in two sets and Jessica Geib posted 29 assists and five digs. Lindsay King led the team with four blocks and also posted six kills.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Friday, Sept. 7, when they face York (Pa.) in the first match of the Dickinson Invitational at 4 p.m. The Warriors will also face Dickinson on Friday at 8 p.m.
