Garase, Flynn, Schwoyer lead Warriors on second day at Swarthmore Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – With two second-place finishes a piece, freshman Kyle Garase (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold), freshman Jilly Flynn (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and sophomore BethAnn Schwoyer (Williamsport, Pa./Homeschooled) led the Lycoming College swimming teams on the final day of the Swarthmore Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 1.
                                
Garase led the men’s team as he came just six one-hundredths of a second from breaking the school record in the 100-yard butterfly, as he took second in 52.69. Garase also had a solid finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.19.
 
Kicking off the second day, sophomore T.J. Guminski (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and freshman Josh Thomas (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) finished in the top six in the 400-yard individual medley, with Guminski posting a team-season-best 4:28.11 and Thomas notching a 4:42.91. Guminski also posted a ninth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.52 and Thomas took fifth in the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best 2:04.27.
 
Junior Zack Brower (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) paced a strong Lycoming effort in the 200-yard freestyle, taking fifth in a season-best 1:51.69 and freshman Dan Apostolu (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) took sixth with a season-best 1:52.91.
 
In the 100-yard breaststroke, the Warriors got a pair of solid performances, with freshman Trevor Endler (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) finishing tied for third in a season-best 1:04.24 and senior Nate Oropollo (Aldan, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) took sixth in his first attempt at the event in 1:07.54. Freshman Zak Kibler (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) also finished in the top 10, posting a time of 1:09.82. Endler also posted a time of 2:23.23 to take fourth in the 200-yard version of the event.
 
Besides Garase in the 100-yard freestyle, three other finished in the top 10, with Brower taking third in a season-best 49.63, Oropollo taking seventh at 50.53 and Apostolu eighth at 50.77.
 
Junior Jack Port (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) finished eighth in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing in 18:48.73.
 
Flynn and Schwoyer posted a combined four runner-up finishes, with Flynn taking second in both breaststroke events and Schwoyer doing it in the backstroke to lead the women’s team.
 
Flynn posted a season-best time of 1:11.23 in the 100-yard breaststroke and freshman Cathrin Manning (York, Pa./York Suburban) notched a time of 1:17.11 to take ninth. Flynn also took second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a season-best 2:36.01 and Manning came in ninth again at 2:43.94, knocking more than seven seconds off her season best.
 
Schwoyer finshed second in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best 1:02.81 and freshman Felicia Sloyer (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) came in sixth in 1:04.97, dropping her season-best by almost three seconds. Schwoyer also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:17.32, and senior Caitlin DeAngelo (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) added a time of 2:29.64 to take seventh.
 
The Warriors had a solid effort in the 100-yard butterfly, with three swimmers placing in the top eight, led by sophomore Lexi Follweiler (Coaldale, Pa./Panther Valley), who took second at 1:04.44 and senior Elisa Becker (Reston, Va./South Lakes) taking third in a season-best 1:05.38. Senior Hope Weber (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) added an eighth-place finish in 1:08.04.
 
A pair of Warriors finished in the top 10 in the 200-yard freestyle with sophomore Danielle Loiseau (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) taking sixth at 2:04.64 and Sloyer took ninth in a season-best time of 2:05.48. Loiseau also took second in the 200-yard butterfly, posting a season-best time of 2:16.34, while Follweiler finished fourth with a time of 2:24.59.
 
Follweiller finished seventh in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.16 and Becker finished ninth in a season-best 58.40.
 
Wrapping up the event, junior Jennie Marosits (Mt. Lakes, N.J./Mt. Lakes) took seventh with a time of 19:40.79 and freshman Hannah Bischoff (Germantown, Md./Northwest) took ninth with a time of 20:13.38.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, Dec. 8, when they host Middle Atlantic Conference foe Messiah at Lamade Gym Natatorium at 1 p.m.
