Oropollo takes second in 50 free to lead Warriors in day one at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swimming in just his second collegiate race, senior Nate Oropollo (Aldan, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) posted the sixth fastest time in the Middle Atlantic Conference this season in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing second in the heat to lead the Lycoming College swimming teams during the first day of the Swarthmore Invitational on Friday, Nov. 30.
 
Oropollo, who was a three-year starter as a defensive end on the football team before joining the swim team at the conclusion of his football career, was one of five Warriors to finish in the top 12 in the 50-yard freestyle in the men’s heat, leading the way with a team season-best 22.44, finishing behind only Rowan’s Ben Cain, who finished in 22.11.
 
Junior Zack Brower (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) took fifth with a season-best 22.60, junior C.J. Arhontakis (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) took seventh with a time of 22.72 and freshman Dan Apostolu (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) took 10th with a season-best 23.10. Junior Luke Dohrman (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) added a 12th-place finish with a season-best 23.30.
 
Freshman Kyle Garase (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) posted a season-best time of 2:02.13 to take sixth in the 200-yard individual medley, closing just 0.52 seconds within the school record time of 2:01.61 set by Jeff Swatkins in 2005.
 
Freshman Trevor Endler (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) finished 10th in the race, posting a season-best time of 2:08.74 and freshman Alex Alexander (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) finished 11th with a time of 2:14.00.
 
Sophomore T.J. Guminski (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had a solid race in the 500-yard freestyle, posting a time of 5:17.54 to take 13th and notch the Warriors’ best time of the season in the event. Junior Jack Port (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) added a season-best time of 5:21.33 to take 15th.
 
The Warriors had a pair of solid performances in the 200-yard individual medley to highlight the performance of the women’s swimmers on day one of the invitational, with freshman Jilly Flynn (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) finishing sixth in a season-best 2:18.51 and sophomore Danielle Loiseau (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) taking 10th with a time of 2:21.99.
 
In the 500-yard freestyle relay, junior Jennie Marosits (Mt. Lakes, N.J./Mt. Lakes) posted a season-best 5:47.48 to take 10th. In the 50-yard freestyle, three Warriors racked up points, as sophomore BethAnn Schwoyer (Williamsport, Pa./Homeschooled) finished eighth with a time of 26.80, senior Elisa Becker (Reston, Va./South Lakes) came in ninth with a time of 26.94 and sophomore Brigid Clark (Wyndmoor, Pa./Springfield) took 11th with a time of 27.04.
 
The Warriors wrap up the Swarthmore Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 1, when the meet resumes at 9 a.m.
