McMahon sets wins mark as Lycoming stops Chargers, 3-0

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
It took a come-from-behind win in each set, but the Lycoming College volleyball team helped head coach Tim McMahon set the school record for career wins in his first try, as the Warriors posted  a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-23) win over Lancaster Bible College on Thursday night, Sept. 29 in non-conference action.
 
McMahon won his 145th career match, surpassing the mark of 144 set by Sonny Kirkpatrick from 1992-99. McMahon has coached 15 all-conference selections, two league Players of the Year, coached the team to five conference finals, won two and coached in two NCAA Tournaments with the Warriors.
 
Junior Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahoney Area) led the Warriors (7-6 overall) with 10 kills and sophomore Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain North) posted 29 aces, 10 digs, three aces and four blocks for her third straight double-double.
 
Sophomore Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) posted nine kills and freshman Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) added eight kills and 15 digs. Sophomore Kassidy Sedore (Stormville, Pa./Spackenkill) notched nine digs.
 
Down 10-7 in the first set, the Warriors fought back to take a four-point lead with a 10-3 run, as Gear notched three kills during the run. The Chargers (8-5 overall) cut the lead to two points at 18-16, but could get no closer and a kill by Oliva clinched the set for the Warriors.
 
In the second set, the Warriors fell behind, 6-1, before freshman Kristen Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) served for five straight points. The Chargers took an 11-7 lead with a 5-1 run, but the Warriors fought back to tie the match at 14 during their own 10-3 run. The teams battled back and forth from there to a tie at 22 before a kill and an ace from Seibel helped close the 25-23 win for the Warriors.
 
In the third set, the Warriors fell behind 19-15 before a three-point service from sophomore Shaina Preiss (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) helped the team tie the set at 19. The teams battled to a tie at 23 after that before a kill from Seibel and a block by Oliva and sophomore Chelsee Strine (South Boardman, Mich./Forest Area) sealed the 25-23 win to end the match.
 
Lauren Helger led the Chargers with 14 kills and 22 digs and Lauren Donato posted 10 kills, 16 digs and three blocks. Katie Coomber notched 21 assists and two aces and libero Lauren Hurd posted 17 digs and two aces.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 1, as they face Manhattanville and King’s (Pa.) during the MAC Crossovers at King’s College. The team faces the Valiants at 10 a.m. before taking on the Monarchs at noon.
