WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A second-half score from junior Matt Snively (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) helped the Lycoming College men’s soccer team close within a goal of No. 25 Franklin & Marshall, but two late goals from the Diplomats helped them close out a 4-1 win at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
Snively forced a turnover and broke away from the pack, firing a bullet into the top of upper right corner to help the Warriors (4-2 overall) cut into the Diplomats’ 2-0 lead. However, the Diplomats closed the game out with a pair of tallies, as Ben Beaver scored his second goal in the 71st minute and Derek Pawlush scored on a breakaway in the 81st minute.
The Diplomats (3-1-1 overall) broke on the board in the 20th minute on a corner kick play, with Alex Grassi finding the back of the net and Ben Beaver added his first goal in the 48th minute.
The Warriors took seven shots in the game, improving in the second half with five shots. The Diplomats goalkeeper Zach Fernberger allowed one goal in the game.
The Diplomats fired 24 shots on net, as junior James Quinn (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) stopped five shots in 79 minutes before yielding to freshman Connor Keenan (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East).
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they head to the Balls Mills Soccer Complex for the Battle for the Lumber with Penn College at 7:30 p.m.
