Warriors secure 25th straight dual meet winning season with 25-9 win over Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Lycoming College wrestling team has been decimated by injuries this year, with five weight classes on Wednesday night, Feb. 16, affected by injuries. However, the  Warriors guaranteed their 25th straight winning season with a  25-9 win over Gettysburg, as sophomore Terrell Nixon (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor)  and freshman Greg Wetzel (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) each posted sudden-victory wins to highlight the win at Bream Gym.

The Warriors improved to 13-11 overall to wrap up their dual meet season, securing the 25th straight winning season, a stretch started in 1986-87 and the team’s 30th-straight non-losing season, a stretch that started in 1981-82. Gettysburg fell to 6-14.

After a loss at 125 pounds, Nixon posted an 11-9 sudden-victory overtime win against Matt Spano, posting a takedown in the second overtime to notch the win. Nixon opened up a 9-4 lead in the first two periods before Spano tied the match, enabling the dramatic finish.

Senior Mike Maurer (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) gave the Warriors the lead, as he notched a 14-1 major decision against Dan Traficanti at 141 pounds and senior Isaiah Britton (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) followed with a convincing 17-1 technical fall of Matt Danielson for his 11th career technical fall.

Wetzel followed with a 4-2 decision against Joe Fiore, as he posted a sudden-victory takedown to seal the match after tying the match in the second period with a reversal.

Sophomore David Smith (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added a 6-4 win over Anthony Iorio to give the Warriors an 18-3 lead, as he posted a first-period takedown and a second-period reversal to take control of the match.

After a Bullets’ decision at 174 pounds, senior Troy Hayre (Falls Church, Va./McLean) added a 6-0 decision against D.J. Neri at 184 pounds and senior Russ Korbul (Asbury, N.J./Northampton C.C.) closed out Lycoming’s scoring with an 11-2 major decision against Luke Mitchell at 197 pounds.

The Warriors get back into action on Friday, Feb. 25 when they enter the postseason at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships at Ithaca College. The tournament starts at 11 a.m.
