OSWEGO, N.Y. – A tight 2-0 win at heavyweight by junior Russell Korbul (Asbury, N.J./Northhampton C.C.) helped lift the Lycoming College wrestling team to a 15-14 win over Oswego State and five bouts with bonus-point wins helped Lycoming to a 33-15 rout of RIT on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 8, as the Warriors completed a perfect Pa./N.Y. duals at the Max Ziel Gymnasium.
The Warriors (7-6 overall, 2-2 Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference) made a dramatic comeback to down Oswego State (2-2 overall, 2-2 ECWC) in the duals’ opening match, as the trio of senior Troy Hayre (McLean, Va./McLean), senior Kyle Crouthamel (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and Korbul scored the meet’s final 10 points to earn the come-from-behind win.
With the score 14-5 after the 174-pound match, Hayre ignited the comeback with a 14-5 major decision over Danny Sutherland at 184 pounds. Crouthamel followed with a 5-1 decision against Kevin Shirley at 197 pounds and Korbul the final three team points with a match-clinching 2-0 win over Joseph Pesce.
The Lakers took a 9-0 lead after three matches before 10th-ranked senior Isaiah Britton (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) got the Warriors on the board with a 9-2 win over Blake Fisher, listed as a contender in the latest D3Wrestle.com rankings. Sophomore Colton Eyer (Orangeville, Pa./Millville) followed with a 4-2 win over Nick Rodgers at 157 pounds to make it 9-6 before the Lakers won matches at 165 and 174 pounds. Both teams were penalized a team point in the 174-pound match, setting up the Warriors’ comeback.
The Warriors earned bonus points in five matches against RIT (1-6 overall, 1-6 ECWC), including two major decisions, two technical falls and a fall to rack up a season-high 33 points.
Junior Stephen Hinton (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) started the match with a 5-1 win over Mike Nguyen at 125 pounds. After an RIT fall helped it take a 6-3 lead, senior Mike Maurer (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) and Britton responded with technical falls, as Maurer beat Brandon Thuotte, 16-0, and Britton added a 16-0 win over Greg Morton.
The Tigers closed within 13-9 after a win at 157, but sophomore David Smith (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) responded with a pin of Collin Doane at 165 and an RIT forfeit at 174 gave the Warriors a 25-9 lead. Hayre added an 8-0 major decision over Braden Friscia at 184 and Crouthamel rounded out Lycoming’s wins with a 10-0 win over Dave Sickler at 197 pounds.
Britton, Hayre and Crouthamel each went 2-0 at the event for the Warriors, with Hayre and Britton each contributing eight team points.
The Warriors get back on the mat on Friday, Jan. 14, with the start of the Budd Whitehill National Duals, where all teams in the Pa./N.Y. Duals will also be, as Lycoming, Oswego State, RIT and King’s make up four of the 20 teams in the field. The first set of matches are set for 9 a.m. and the brackets will be released on Tuesday, Jan. 11.
