WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College wrestling team staged a valiant comeback with 13 points in the last three matches of the consolation quarterfinals of the Budd Whitehill National Duals against Oswego State, but fell, 19-17, at Lamade Gym, to conclude their tournament on Saturday morning, Jan. 15.
The College of New Jersey won its ninth Whitehill Duals title with a 19-13 win over Ohio Northern in the championship match.
The Warriors fell behind 10-0 to the Lakers before 10th-ranked senior Isaiah Britton (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) posted a 16-2 win over Blake Fisher, listed as a contender in the latest D3Wrestle.com rankings, at 149 pounds.
Three more decisions gave the Lakers a 19-4 lead when junior Tyler Cunningham (Hadden Township, N.J./Hadden Township), wrestling as a fill-in at 184 pounds, planted Dan Sutherland in 1:12. Senior Troy Hayre (McLean, Va./McLean) followed with a 9-0 major decision at 197 pounds in his first match of the season at the weight, downing Kyle Sheridan and making it 19-14.
Senior Russ Korbul (Asbury, N.J./Northhampton C.C.) followed with a 3-1 victory at heavyweight against Joe Pesce, scoring a reversal in the second overtime period to secure the win.
The Warriors get back on the mat on Friday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. when they face Messiah in an Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference match.
