Warriors strike late to down Defenders, 2-1

Box Score

CLARKS SUMMITT, Pa. – Baptist Bible College turned up the pressure early, but the Lycoming College women’s soccer team answered late, turning a one-goal deficit into a 2-1 win over the Defenders in the last 16 minutes on Saturday, Sept. 18, in a non-conference road match for the Warriors.

The Warriors (4-1 overall) tied the game in the 75th minute as junior #Kelly Prendergast# (Edison, N.J./Rutgers Prepatory) found senior Kati Shaner (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) on a cross and Shaner deposited it in the net.

Just 12 minutes later, sophomore Jessica Rae (New Freedom, Pa./Herford) deposited a loose ball in the box into the back of the net, providing the winning, 2-1 margin.

The Defenders (4-3 overall) took the lead late in the first half, as Sandy Richie scored on a corner from Carly Harper, setting up the Warriors’ late game heroics.

The Defender lead could have been greater, but freshman goalkeeper #Caitlin Dougherty# (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) stopped a penalty kick in the fifth minute, then stopped the rebound shot, helping keep the game scoreless.

Dougherty made four saves for Lycoming and Cierra Byron made seven for the Defenders.

Lycoming held a 12-10 advantage in shots and a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Warriors get back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 21 when they head to Selinsgrove, Pa., to face Susquehanna in the River Derby at 7 p.m., at the Sassafras Complex.
