Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Down a goal and to only 10 men after a red card early in the second half, the Lycoming College men’s soccer team got a needed boost from sophomore Jimmy Deasel (Kingsville, Md./Loyola Blakefield), who scored two goals in a span of two minutes to lead the Warriors to a 3-2 upset win over defending Freedom Conference champion Misericordia at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Sept. 1.
After a red card was issued just 30 seconds into the second half, the Cougars (0-1 overall) struck with Andy Bush beating the keeper on a one-on-one to take a 2-1 lead. The Warriors (1-0 overall) never wavered, though, and Deasel took advantage in the 60th minute, scoring off a rebound on a shot by sophomore #Matt Snively# (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown). Freshman #Jamison Alleman# (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) earned his first collegiate assist on the play, passing in for the shot by Snavely, which rebounded wide and allowed Deasel to put it in the left corner.
Two minutes later, the Warriors took the lead as Deasel converted a penalty kick, awarded to the Warriors after a handball just inside the Cougars’ goalbox.
Lycoming was the first to find the scoreboard, as sophomore Charlie Vess (Park Hill, Md./Great Hills) dented the twine in the 38th minute, scoring on a through ball offered up from Snively.
However, the Cougars fought back, with Joey Scanlon scoring off a corner just 90 seconds before the half to send the teams to the locker room knotted at one.
The Warriors and Cougars went right after each other, with both offenses clicking early on, as Misericordia headed two shots on goal in the first 10 minutes and Lycoming fired in two pretty shots off its first corner of the season in the 13th minutes. Sophomore #Pat Marion# (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) got to a corner kick and fired a shot to the right side that resulted in a diving save and sophomore Dominick Dorsey (Manchaster, Md./North Carroll) got to the rebound and fired a laser from 15 yards right into the goalie’s chest.
Deasel led the Warriors with two goals and Snively added two assists. Freshman Nial Krach (Forest Hill, Md./Calvert Hill College) stopped eight shots in his debut between the pipes for the Warriors, allowing two goals.
Dan Fritz made five saves for the Cougars.
The Warriors were tagged with six cards in the match, but Misericordia held a 15-14 advantage in fouls. The Cougars also held a 13-11 advantage in shots.
Before the game, the Warriors observed a moment of silence for longtime friend of Lycoming athletics, alumnus and P.A. announcer Dick Zimmerman.
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday with the first game of the Kick-Off Classic when they face Montclair State at 12 p.m.
