Florida trip a successful outing for Lady Warrior softball

CLERMONT, Fla. – Playing in 10 games in less than a week, the Lycoming College softball team concluded its spring training in Clermont, Fla. on Saturday, March 6. The Lady Warriors picked up three wins during the trip, including a 7-4 win over NCAA Division II Lake Superior State University.

Lycoming went 2-2 during its first day of action on March 1. The Lady Warriors defeated the University of Michigan-Dearborn 3-0 and LSSU 7-4, but lost to Concordia University 4-3 and Commonwealth Conference opponent Lebanon Valley College 4-0.

Against Michigan-Dearborn, freshman Kelsey Ritter scored a run, going one-for-two at the plate with a double. Sophomore shortstop Manda Peck scored while Taylor Lesser got a hit on her only plate appearance and scored a run. Freshman Holly Lansberry was credited with the victory.

Against LVC, Lycoming (3-9) picked up hits from Peck, who went two-for-three, and singles from Jess Nabholz and Shauna Starr. Versus Concordia, freshman Janelle Poorman had two singles. Fellow freshman Allyson Marianelli scored a run, as did Lansberry. Freshman Ashley Demchak slugged the first home run of her young career.

The Lady Warriors capped the first day of action LSSU. Freshman Brieanne Braga had two singles, while Ritter had three singles and a run. Lansberry, the winning pitcher, helped her own cause, scoring two runs and hitting a triple. Lycoming picked up runs from Poorman, Peck and Lesser, as well as Bethany Garnand and Amy Cline.

On March 2, Lycoming dropped three games, 14-1 to No. 3 Ohio Northern University, 13-1 to John Carroll University and a close 6-5 contest against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Against Ohio Northern, Poorman was the lone run scorer, getting a single and a double in her three at-bats. Nabholz had two hits in three appearances, as did Cline, who registered two singles. In the John Carroll outing, Tierra Miller scored Lycoming’s only run, doing so after being walked. Against Rose-Hulman, Peck hit another triple while also scoring three runs. Cline was one-for-two and walked once. Poorman hit a double, eventually reaching home plate.

On March 4, the Warriors split two games, defeating Mary Washington University 11-8, before dropping a 10-8 decision to Marywood University. Peck hit her second triple in as many games, as well as two singles and scored two runs. Lesser had a solid outing, getting four hits on five at-bats, scoring a run. Nabholz had two singles and a run. Poorman was perfect in the batter’s box, getting three singles and scoring. Marianelli had two singles, scoring three runs. Braga was the game’s winning pitcher.

Against Marywood, Starr was walked and scored on a Cline single. Lesser hit a triple and scored two runs. Nabholz went three-for-four at the plate, hitting two doubles and a single while scoring a run.

The Lady Warriors dropped their final three games of the trip, but got solid team play in the contests. On March 4, Lycoming fell 9-0 to Alma College, but six different Warriors hit singles. Against Hiram College, Lycoming lost 5-3, getting runs from Cline, Starr and Miller, who reached on a fielder’s choice. In the final contest on March 6, the Lady Warriors received singles from Marienlli, Ritter and Taylor in an 8-0 loss to Grand Valley State University.

Lycoming is idle until Saturday, March 13, when it competes at the Ferrum (Va.) College Invitational. The first game is set for 9 a.m. against the host school.
