WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Facing off against a team with five nationally-ranked wrestlers and ranked fifth in the country, the Lycoming College wrestling team got some veteran leadership from junior Kyle Crouthamel (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and senior Troy Hayre (McLean, Va./McLean) in the season-opener against Ithaca on Tuesday night, as each posted wins, but the Warriors fell, 32-7, to the Bombers in Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference action.

Ithaca (1-0 overall, 1-0 ECWC) took a 26-0 lead after seven matches to clinch the meet, but Hayre and Crouthamel stepped up late to get the Warriors (0-1 overall, 0-1 ECWC) on the board.

Hayre picked up the first win at 184 pounds, as he notched a takedown 28 seconds into the first period. After Josue Mendez earned a pair of escapes, one after the takedown and one after he chose down in the second, Hayre chose down to start the third period and he earned an escape just six seconds into the period to take the 3-2 decision. He also avoided a late flurry for a takedown by Mendez, regaining a neutral position before both went out of bounds.

At 197 pounds, Crouthamel, wrestling two weight classes up from the 174 pounds that he wrestled at in 2009-10, took control of the match in the second period, as his opponent, Shane Bartum, chose bottom and Crouthamel tilted him three times for near fall points. Both wrestlers traded escapes after that to finish off the 10-1 major decision for Crouthamel.

A Bombers’ fall ended the meet.

The Warriors get back on the mat on Wednesday, Nov. 10 when they travel to McDaniel for a 7 p.m. match.
