ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - With the score tied at 107 after the first 12 events, the Lycoming College men’s swim team took control of its meet at Elizabethtown with a sweep of the 200-yard individual medley led by junior Joe Andrie (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley), who took first for the third time on the day, and a second-place finish from freshman Peter Fields (Burke, Va./Robinson) to help lead the team to a 126-124 win in Middle Atlantic Conference action. The women’s swim team, likewise, used a 15-point effort, thanks to the third first-place finish of the day from senior Stacy Flick (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) in the 200-yard individual medley to put them in position to earn a 131-131 tie.
Andrie helped the Warriors (1-2 overall, 1-1 MAC) take control in the next to last event on the men's side, as he posted a time of 2:11.86 and Fields followed behind at 2:13.70, besting the Blue Jay swimmers by seven seconds. The Warriors fell in the 400-yard freestyle relay, but picked up second and third in the race to earn six points and take the two-point win.
Junior Myles Biggs (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) posted a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing in 11:20.28 to help the team out to a good start in the second event.
The Warriors dominated the breaststroke events thanks to Andrie, who posted a time of 1:04.15 to take the 100-yard breaststroke and a time of 2:21.93 in the 200 to take first in both races. Freshman Jake Pelinsky (Southwick, Mass./Westfield) added a 1:08.12 to take second place in the 100 and a time of 2:28.68 to take second in the 200.
The Warriors also took second and third place in four events, racking up valuable points en route to their first win of the season.
On the women's side, the Warriors (0-2-1 overall, 0-1-1 MAC) took first in five events, led by a quartet of first from Flick.
The Warriors started the day by taking first and second in the 400-yard medley relay, as senior Meg Emery (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock), Flick, sophomore Hope Weber (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) and sophomore Caitlin DeAngelo (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) posted a time of 4:25.05 to take first in the event while freshmen Jennie Marosits (Mt. Lakes, N.J./Mt. Lakes) and Ariel Smith (Hanover Township, Pa./Holy Redeemer), sophomore Lindsey Hunsicker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and senior Melanie Johnson (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) came in second.
Hunsicker added a win in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 2:08.90 and Marosits and Emery swept the 100-yard backstroke, with Marosits winning the event in 1:06.01 and Emery just behind her at 1:07.10. Flick and Smith took first and second in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, with Flick posting a time of 1:08.51 and Smith adding a time of 1:13.85 in the 100 and Flick adding a time of 2:36.77 and Smith notching a 2:44.63 in the 200. Emery added a win in the 200-yard backstroke, posting a time of 2:25.16.
The Warriors, down by two points entering the next-to-last meet, were helped out by Flick and Weber, who took first and second in the 200 IM to help ensure the tie, as Flick notched a winning 2:21.38 and Weber added a time of 2:27.62.
The Warriors get back in the pool with another Middle Atlantic Conference meet on Wednesday, Nov. 17, when Misericordia comes to the Lamade Gym Pool for a 6:30 p.m. showdown.
