WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Lycoming College wrestling team scored 18 takedowns in an Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference match against Messiah College to win 22-12 on Friday, Jan. 22. The Warriors recorded a pin and a major decision in back-back weight classes to earn 11 team points.
In the lightweight classes, Lycoming picked up a pair of decisions.
Stephen Hinton won his 125-pound match 8-6, while
Andrew Lewis earned a 5-1 decision at 133-pounds. The match was Lewis’ first action since Dec. 12 against SUNY-Brockport.
Lycoming (11-5, 4-1 ECWC) picked up 11 points in the next two weight classes. At 141-pounds,
Mike Maurer used a cradle to pin his opponent at 5:17, followed by 149-pounder
Isaiah Britton earning a his seventh major decision of the season 12-1. Britton has won 14 straight and is 18-1 overall for the year.
Jeff Thomas was given the tall order of replacing an injured
Christopher Dahlheimer, currently ranked No. 5 in the nation at 165-pounds, to wrestle the No. 9-ranked Trent Zempel. Thomas was down 5-0 going into the third period, but put together a four-point effort before losing by a close 6-4 decision after Zempel’s riding time, keeping the Falcons (7-8) at bay and not allowing bonus points.
In the upper weight classes,
Kyle Crouthamel earned a 5-3 victory at 174-pounds, while
Russel Korbul scored a 7-1 decision at 197-pounds.
Lycoming’s next action will be the Messiah Open on Saturday, Jan. 23. The individual tournament will begin at 9 a.m. The next dual meet will be Tuesday, Jan. 26, when the Warriors travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to face King’s College. The first match is set for 7 p.m.
