Warriors fall in championship game to Dickinson 3-2

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa
. --- In the championship game of the 2009 Lycoming College men’s soccer Kickoff Classic, the Warriors fell to Dickinson College 3-2 on Sunday, Sept. 6. Senior midfielder Mike Coates found the net just 34 seconds into the match for his second goal of the season.

Lycoming is now 2-1 on the season while Dickinson improves to 3-0.

Coates’ (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) was assisted by junior defender Joe Karslo (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional), who chipped the ball over the defense and found Coates on the back side. Lycoming took a 2-0 lead six minutes later at 6:45 as sophomore Randon Wilston (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield High School) and junior defender Scott Hordis (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) connected on a 2-v-1 situation. The Warriors took their 2-0 lead in to halftime.

After a Dickinson player was shown the yellow card 48 seconds in the second half, the Red Devils scored three unanswered goals. Shepherd Waldenberger had a hand in all three goals, scoring assists on the first two and then getting a goal of his own on a rebounded shot.

Senior Warrior goalkeeper David Bald (Edgewater, Md./South River) made three saves on the day. Both teams reached double-digits in shots, with Dickinson taking 12 and Lycoming taking 11.

Lycoming is back in action on Friday, Sept. 11 when it hosts local rival Susquehanna University in the annual “Battle of the Boot.” Game time is set for 5 p.m. at the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Conference.

In the first game of the day, Utica College finished third in the tournament after defeating Centenary College 4-0.
