READING, Pa. --- Enjoying two goals from two players, the Lycoming College women’s soccer team picked up its first Commonwealth Conference victory 2-0 over Alvernia University on Saturday, Oct. 17. The Lady Warriors out-shot the Crusaders 13-9 in the contest.
Lycoming is now 7-8-1 overall and 1-3 in the Commonwealth while Alvernia slips to 3-13 on the season and 0-4 in the conference.
The Warriors’ goals came at opposite ends of the match, with Kaitlin Horn (Ringtown, Pa./North Schuylkill) finishing a pass from Ashley Sitler (Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) at the 10:52 mark of the first half. Lycoming took its 1-0 lead into half time.
In the second half, Lycoming controlled the action, only allowing two Alvernia shots in the period. Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea Powers (Dover, Pa./Dover Area) made five stops on the day to preserve the shut out.
Kati Shaner (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) scored the insurance goal in the 84th minute after finishing a great pass from Kelly Prendergast (Edison, N.J./Rutgers Preparatory). Prendergast and Horn led the team in shots, taking four each.
The Lady Warriors face Messiah College, currently ranked first in the country, on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m. at the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex.
