READING, Pa. --- The Lycoming College men’s soccer team was stunned 2-1 in double overtime by Alvernia University on Saturday, Oct. 17. Lycoming out-shot the Crusaders 23-5, but had trouble finding the goal.
The loss drops the Warriors to 10-5-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the Commonwealth Conference while Alvernia improves to 4-9 on the season and 1-3 in the league.
Lycoming was down early; just 1:05 into the match after Alvernia converted a penalty kick. The Warriors controlled the offense in both halves, taking seven shots in first period and another 12 in the second half.
Freshman Jimmy Deasel knotted the game 1-1 at the start of the second half at 52:16 after chipping in a pass from Dan Marcin (Wilmington, Del./Concord). Deasel (Kingsville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) took three shots in the game, placing two on goal.
The Warriors almost escaped with their second conference tie of the season, but Alvernia scored in the 113th minute of the match for the win.
Of its 23 shots, Lycoming placed 14 on goal and held a narrow 5-4 margin in corner kicks. Sophomore Randon Wilston (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) was the team-leader in shots with six.
Lycoming returns home to the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 21 when it faces Messiah College, currently ranked third in country. The start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
